Origin Story
China has a long and famous history of tea production; however, since the 1900s, Arabica coffee has been cultivated in Yunnan Province. Coffee farmers have found an ideal area for growing coffee in the mountainous region of Menglian. This region borders Myanmar, also well known for its premium coffee. At 800 to 1500 M.A.S.L, Menglian shares similar geographical features and climate with the Colombian Andes Mountains. With a wide range of shade trees providing abundant biodiversity, coffee production in China, particularly within this region, is ideal. Our Meng Liang High Grown (HG) Grade 1 is produced by over 50 local smallholder farmers who bring their coffee for processing at the Yun Tian washing station, where the coffee is sorted, washed, dried, and ready for export. The mill follows Rainforest Alliance Certification practices and has implemented a sustainable management services team who works with the local farmers on improving the quality of coffee, production through sustainable environmental and social conditions, and promotion of agroforestry as a means to a stable climate and economic resilient livelihoods for the farmers.
