Tirra Estate is located in the San Marcos district in the Tarrazu municipality and sits at elevations of 1500-1600 MASL. The cherry grown on the Estate is processed by the Coopetarrazu cooperative mill. Tirra Estate is owned by Coopetarrazu and was purchased to conduct coffee research and microlot production. Over 60 per cent of the 100-ha farm is dedicated to coffee production.

The Tarrazu region is a rural community noted worldwide for its traditional values and leadership, which is growing fine coffees. It is one of the world’s most famous regions for coffee cultivation. Optimum soil and climate and highly skilled and experienced producers make for ideal cultivating conditions.

Coopetarrazu cooperative is located in the heart of the Tarrazu region and is dedicated to promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices in the community. They have implemented a ‘Coffee, Culture, Quality of Life’ Sustainability plan to track their environmental impact, implement better practices, and create a culture of ecological respect among members and children. Through this program, Coopetarrazu offers its members free seeds and soil analyses, allowing farmers to undertake reforestation and understand how topography and surrounding ecosystems impact their soil.
Farmers can subsequently adjust their practices according to the specific soil needs. The cooperative conducts education programs for community youth, focusing on tracking bird and insect populations and learning about these species’ critical role in coffee production and ecosystem maintenance. Coopetarrazu also supports seasonal migrant workers by providing on-site housing and organising festivals yearly to celebrate their indigenous cultural heritage.

Funds raised through the sale of this coffee will be invested in supplying member producers with organic fertilizer and shade trees.
