Grinding Coffee: How important is it?

How important is the right grind size? Did you know it affects the flavour and strength of your coffee?

  • The grind size directly affects how quickly water can extract flavor compounds from the coffee beans, which in turn affects the overall taste and quality of your brew.
  • So for your coffee making method, if the grind size is too coarse, the water may pass through the coffee too quickly, therefore not extracting enough flavour, resulting in a weak and flavourless cup of coffee.
  • If the grind size is too fine, the water may not be able to pass through the coffee quickly enough, therefore extracting too much flavour too quickly, resulting in a bitter and over extracted cup of coffee.
  •  The right grind size is dependent on the brewing method you are using.  For instance, espresso requires a very fine grind size, while a French Press calls for a coarse grind size.
  •  Always check you’ve selected the right grind size and if grinding at home, experiment until you find your sweet spot.
  • When grinding at home, it’s super important to regularly change your grinder blades.  This can make all the difference.  The quality of your grinder can be just as important as the quality of your espresso machine.
  • It’s part of the excitement (for us definitely) and coffee process to experiment with different grind sizes and brewing methods to find the perfect combination that suits your taste preferences.
  • And if you’re not grinding at home,  you can select your preferred grind size when ordering online with us.
