Why & How to V60?

The V60, developed by Hario, is a popular pour-over method known for its simplicity and ability to bring out the intricate flavours of specialty coffee.

We have a V60 in our Espresso Bar and will often pour over one of our ‘Roaster’s Choice‘ Single Origins of the week.

This step-by-step guide will show you how to make a delicious V60 coffee.

Equipment (we’ve included links from our online store for your convenience):

  • V60 dripper
  • V60 filter papers
  • Freshly roasted coffee beans / ground coffee
  • Coffee grinder or pre-ground coffee
  • Gooseneck kettle
  • Digital scale
  • Timer
  • Cup or mug
  • Spoon or stirrer
  • Hot water (preferably filtered) 94 C

Method

Step 1: Grind Your Coffee Beans / Prepare your ground coffee
Measure out the desired amount of coffee based on 15g of ground coffee for every 250 ml of water for ideal coffee to water ratio.

For V60, a medium grind is generally recommended. Adjust the grinder settings accordingly, aiming for a texture resembling coarse sand. Grind the beans just before brewing to preserve their freshness and aromatic qualities. If ordering pre-ground from us, choose the ‘Filter’ grind

Step 2: Prepare the V60 and Rinse the Filter
Place the V60 dripper on top of your mug or server and insert a paper filter into the dripper. Pre-rinse the paper filter by pouring 100ml of hot water in a circular motion around the V60 filter paper. Discard the rinse water from the mug/server.

Step 3: Dose and Bloom
Add the freshly ground coffee to the rinsed filter paper. Pour 40ml of hot (94 deg) water onto the grounds saturating them evenly. Allow the coffee to ‘bloom’ for 30 seconds.

Step 4: Pour in Stages
After the bloom, slowly and steadily pour the remaining hot water in stages, using a circular motion. First, pour in the centre, move outward in a spiral pattern, and then back towards the centre. Maintain a consistent pour rate to submerge the coffee bed throughout the brewing process. Aim to complete the brewing process within 45-60 seconds, adjusting the pouring rate to achieve this. If the brewing time is too short, try a finer grind or slower pouring; adjust the opposite way if it’s too long.

Step 5: Enjoy
Once the brewing process is complete, remove the V60 dripper from your mug or server and enjoy!

The V60 coffee brewing method offers a delightful sensory experience and allows the subtle nuances of your coffee to shine, especially for single-origin coffees.

Enjoy your delicious brew!
