Why the Grind Matters: Unlocking the Flavour in Every Cup

Getting the grind right is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in brewing great coffee. Here’s why it matters, and how to get it right for your favourite brew method.

What Does Grinding Do?

  • Coffee beans = flavour locked in. Whole beans have limited surface area for water to extract flavour.
  • Grinding increases surface area. One gram of espresso-ground coffee can have up to 82,000 particles!
  • More surface area = more efficient extraction of coffee solubles = better flavour in your cup.

Why the Grind Size Must Match the Brew Method

Different brewing methods need different grind sizes for optimal extraction:

  • French Press / Plunger → Coarse grind
  • Espresso Machine → Fine grind
  • Turkish Coffee / Ibrik → Extra fine grind
  • Using the wrong grind = bad extraction = bitter or bland coffee.

Beware the “Universal Grind”

  • One-size-fits-all” grinds (like supermarket blends) don’t truly suit any method well.
  • They’ll work, but your coffee won’t be great — and we know you want great.

Grinder Maintenance = Better Coffee

  • Grind your own for ultimate freshness and control.
  • Keep your grinder in top shape:

“My grinder's not working!”
“When did you last change the blades?”
“Never. I’ve had it 15 years…”
Yep — there’s your problem.

No Grinder? No Worries.
