In 1924, engineer Toleff Bache Monniche, along with his wife, established Finca Lerida. Here he built his house completely by hand in a Norwegian countryside style and built the first Coffee Plantation by gravity in Panama.
By 1929, Finca Lerida exported its first shipment of Panamanian coffee to Germany, and this began Panama ́s prestige reputation as one of the exotic coffees of greater quality in Europe. Finca Lerida is currently managed by the Amoruso Family, who coordinates the farm maintenance, agriculture and processing of the coffee. They are also responsible for protecting the lush virgin forest that surrounds the property and offers a unique accommodation experience for all visitors to the Boutique Hotel Finca Lerida which is located in the middle of the coffee plantation.
Finca Lerida is comprised of five farms located in the province of Chiriqui in Panama, specifically in the Boquete region. The farms range between 1500 and 2000 meters in altitude. With its special atmospheric and topographic conditions, Finca Lerida is able to grow different arabica varietals with qualities that translate well in the cup such as fragrance, flavour, acidity and body.
Picking standards are tightly controlled to ensure only the ripest cherries are harvested and assure a premium product. The wet and dry mill processes are carefully monitored throughout the producing season to make sure the beans meet their full potential. In honey processing, the coffee is picked and sorted and then run through a mill that removes the cherry skins and some of the sticky, honey-like mucilage (hence the name) that surrounds the cherry bean before drying on raised beds, while the natural types are sorted and dried with no further processing.
