This SHB Volcan de Oro is harvested from areas surrounding the small town of San Marcos, situated in the Western Highlands of
Guatemala. It is typically harvested from altitudes of 1300-1800 MASL. The region is characterized by its four volcanoes, Tacana,
Tajumulco, Santa Maria and Santiaguito. San Marcos is the warmest of all the coffee growing regions in Guatemala, and also has the
highest rainfall and earliest flowering. The seasonal rains come to San Marcos earlier than other regions, arriving in mid-April and
tapering off by mid-November. The annual rainfall in the region is 5000ml. Most of the coffee is cultivated on farms with their own
processing mill. Bourbon, Caturra and Cataui are the most common varietals cultivated in the region and harvest is typically conducted
from December-March. Due to the unpredictability of the rain during harvest season, a lot of the coffee is pre-dried in the sun and
finished in a mechanical dryer. Coffees from San Marcos are typically aromatic, with pronounced acidity, good body and delicate
floral note.
